I am Associate Professor (UHD) of Political and Social Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Amsterdam, where I have been working since 2010. I am also an associated member of the Institut für Sozialforschung (Institute for Social Research) in Frankfurt am Main, where I taught political philosophy before coming to Amsterdam, and a Program Leader at the Amsterdam Center for Globalization Studies.
I am spending the academic year 2018-2019 at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, working on a book manuscript tentatively entitled “Democratizing Disobedience: Towards a Critical Theory of Political Protest”.
Currently I direct the NWO-funded 5-year research project "Transformations of Civil Disobedience".
My main areas of specialization are: critical theory, civil disobedience, democracy, collective action, recognition, migration and citizenship, and methodological questions in political and social philosophy. Other areas of interest include the philosophy of the social sciences, moral philosophy, Rousseau, and social and political theory.
I am a book review editor of the Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie, a member of the editorial collectives of the journals Krisis and Polar, an editorial associate of Constellations, and a regular contributor to Cargo and Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
I was a visiting scholar in the Philosophy Department at Columbia University in New York (January to July 2016) and visiting professor in the Philosophy Department and the research group Sophiapol at Université Paris Nanterre (January to May 2017).
